Canon
Starwriter Pro 5000 (1995)
This GEOS-based personal word processor sold for under $600 and shipped with keyboard, printer, processor, and CRT. It had its audience and people still buy ink cartridges for it.
This product highlighted the challenge of putting complex word processing, ink-jet printing and graphical interface software into ROM. Our audience (OEM and home user) wanted cutting-edge usability without sacrificing the quality inherent in consumer electronics appliances. This was (and still remains) a very difficult proposition. Eventually, Canon left the consumer word processor market as low-end PCs dropped in price. As with workstations, the overwhelming familiarity and low cost of Microsoft / Intel functionality has driven narrowly situated competitors out of the market. Despite bugs and security holes, we accept the PC because the benefits outweigh the costs. " Stewart Noyce (Ex Geoworks Director Produkt Management 1992-1996)
