Pi/GEOS Alpha!

    Für die deutschen Hilfedateien benötige ich optimalerweise ein deutsches Geos; für die von mir genannten Programme optimalerweise mit Internetverbindung.

    Deine englische Version 6 mit integriertem Internet funktioniert, aber das ist leider nicht optimal für meine Belange (siehe oben). Ich habe dann kurzentschlossen die "geos.ini" aus dem englischen Geos6 in eine deutsche CI-Latest kopiert, aber das wollte nicht mal so eben funktionieren. Das ist z. Z. der Stand.

    Nun hast du ja geschrieben, das du die CI-Latest-Versionen auch mit einer Internetroutine ausgestattet hast - ich gehe mal davon aus, auch die Deutsche. Werde mir dieses Pi/GEOS herunterladen und testen.

    nur interessehalber: nutzt die jüngste Version von Pi/GEOS das RPi Build der Basebox oder eine normale DosBox Version?

    Hallo Konstantin,

    für die aktuelle BaseBox (2-geos-host-api-new) ist der Pi/GEOS Unterbau (libpcap) inzwischen zu alt. Weiterhin fehlt mir auch die LPTx Emulation für die Druckerumleitung. Deshalb verwende ich als Codebasis die mit Debian/Raspbian gelieferte DOSBox 0.74-x, welche ich mit Patches für: SVGA-Modi, LPTx-Emulation (simple: DOS device file only), NE2k-Emulation und Scrollrad->PgUp/PgDow versehen habe.

    Hi,

    I can't get by the setup. When I boot after setting it up, I just get back to the setup. The Ensemble splash shows, but the boots into setup. I probably missed something, or doing something wrong :(

    I also having another issue, the famous upside down issue, the image on the 7 inch screen is shown upside down, and needs to be reversed 180 degrees. This is a really crappy issue on the Rpi, that they never really solved, just halfbaked solutions..... I need to boot out to PiOS and edit config.txt. How do I do it?

    I have now managed to rotate the screen in /boot/config.txt, by editing config.txt directly after flashing the SD-card. Still, I get back into setup after starting DOSBox.

    I have also noticed that Ethernet connection to the Pi is mandatory during the setup.

    Is the pi/geos tailored toward RPi400? I have a RPi3, maybe that is why it does not work?

    Hi Hans,

    with Pi/GEOS 1.1 I had to switch from DispmanX to X11 for graphics output because the first one is long deprecated so a bug in SDL1.2 causing the image to be shifted downwards will probably never been fixed. Doing so you loose the capability of the proprietary VideoCore engine to scale any DOBox chosen resolution transparently to the resolution supported by your output device/display. This means the resolution set in GEOS/DOSBox must be supported by your display - otherwise the X server will simply crash. This seems to me what happens in your case, because the the cheap 7" Pi displays controller only supports the panels native resolution.

    So what can you do?

    1. Go and by a modern 13 to 17 inch portable display from one of the many Chinese manufactures. It must support any of the 1024 or 1280 by something resolution. I decided for 2K model that offers 2560x1600 native resolution, so it will perfectly scale up from 1280x800 supported GEOS. A 4K model with a good scaling HW will probably produce an anti-aliased, smooth 1280x720 image, which can greatly improve the readability of text (I like this very much on my X-class Thinkpad).

    2. If you still want to play around with this poor display - choose the "DOS fun pack" as you primary virtual HDD and any newer GEOS image as the secondary. This will cause Pi/GEOS to boot into pure DOS session where you can use the provided Volkov Commander editor to modify GEOS.INI to find a setting that will not crashes the X server.

    Thanks, for your quick reply!

    I have found another solution. I have installed latest Basebox and Ensemble with the host internet connection. It works great, but is a bit slow. Internet browsing works amazingly well, a bit slow, but stable. The amazing thing is that I get 800x600 squeezed in by Basebox, so it is kind of fun. One thing I miss with PiGeos is that there should be a way to "shell out" to the text mode in RaspBerry Pi OS, just to be able to ajust things in RPi OS. Someting to consider?

    Maybe, I will play with the DOS fun pack in the future.

    However, my RPi 3 is old, and so is the monitor, and I don't know if I would spend more money on them. Better to get a RPi 400 or better and run on a conventional monitor. The 7 inch screen have so many drawback, not only the resolution, it is a problem to switch SD-card, I have to disassemble the computer and remove the internal video cable to be able to switch SD-card, which is kind of clumpsy. Another drawback is that it is not possible to see the access LEDs, they are buried inside the box.

    Super, da haben sich aber wirklich alle Mühe gegeben. Nach der neuen Seite habe ich es gleich ausprobiert. Image auf SD-Karte gebracht und danach den Raspi gestartet: jedoch ohne Erfolg. Nach einer kleinen Gedenkminute sehe ich beim Booten den Hinweis, dass es nicht unter dem Modell 5 funktioniert.

    Also einen alten 3b rausgesucht. Karte rein -> Super bootet und ich komme mit Geos auch ins Internet.

    Jetzt werde ich diese Image mal inspizieren, wie Ihr mit Dosbox und der neusten Geos-Version die Internetfähigkeit hinbekommen habt. Denn auf meinem Hauptrechner der Pi5 arbeite ich nebenbei auch mit Geos in der Dosbox. Alles was ich bisher ausprobiert habe, ist jedoch leider gescheitert.
