NewDeal Technical Support Document 272

Specific Printer Notes, Epson

This document contains notes about using Epson printers with NewDeal software

Note: You must have NewDeal software to use NewDeal print drivers. NewDeal print drivers will not work with other Windows, OS/2, or DOS programs.

With some Epson dot matrix printers, the dot overlap is so great at high mode that halftones may appear darker than expected. Using medium or low mode may overcome this problem and still provide adequate resolution for some print jobs.

If the Epson Action 4000 is not listed specifically in your software, use the Epson LQ 510 driver or the Epson FX-80 driver.

Epson Action 4500

If the Epson Action 4500 is not listed specifically in your software, use the Epson LQ 1010 driver.

Epson Action 5000

If the Epson Action 5000 is not listed specifically in your software, use the Epson LQ 570 driver or the Epson LQ-510 driver.

Epson Action 5500

If the Epson Action 5500 is not listed specifically in your software, use the Epson LQ 1070 driver.

Epson LQ 1050

The very first models of the Epson LQ-1050 are actually incompatible with the later versions of the LQ-1050. The test printout in setup doesn't print out on a single page. It begins at the top of the page, form feeds in the middle and then continues the rest of the printout on the second page. Printing problems can be resolved by choosing either the Epson LQ-500 or LQ-1500 print drivers.

If you have problems with blank pages between printed pages on the Epson LQ-1050 with a sheet feeder, try this:

Epson LQ 200

If your Epson LQ-200 prints horizontal lines wider than vertical lines, try using the Epson LQ-850 driver instead of the LQ-800 driver.

Epson LQ 2500

If your LQ-2500 isn't working, check the following:

When you attach your printer to the computer is it a straight shot without a printer share device in between and with a cable not exceeding 6 feet in length?

If all the above is OK, then run Preferences, click Printer and make sure that your printer is set for the correct port. Return to Preferences, click Computer, and select BIOS for your LPT port.

Epson LQ 510

A customer reports that when feeding single sheets (i.e. not continuous form), the printer feeds a blank sheet between each page or it feeds each successive sheet an inch or two further down than the one before it. One work around is to set page and paper height both to 10.5" rather than 11".

Another customer reports, "My printer is an Epson LQ510. In NewWrite, I use Page Setup to create a document 3 inches high and 3 inches wide. I type the word Hello. I then go to print it, hit Change Options, and set the paper size to 3 inches by 3 inches. I tell it to print 3 copies. In high or medium quality or any text mode setting, the printout has the word Hello printed every 3 inches down the page, as I'd expect. In low quality (graphics mode), however, the word Hello prints out every 9 inches."

Epson LQ 800

If you have any problems with the LQ 800 driver, try the FX 850 (Epson mode). One customer reports: "Not only does it print on Medium, it does so quickly and it looks good. Interestingly, when I print the Events window in NewPlanner, the size of the letter is pleasingly larger than it was using the driver that is named for my printer."

Epson LQ 850

On some Epson LQ-850 printers, printing in high quality mode produces a page with horizontal white spaces about 1/16" high every 1/4" down the page, lines of text are duplicated, and slash marks ("/") may appear down the left margin of the printout. In other programs, such as WordPerfect, you may have had to select the Epson LQ 850 (M-8 ROM) driver. If you have this problem, you may own an older version of the LQ-850 that does not support 360 x 360 dpi printing. Instead, it supports only 360 x180 dpi printing. Select Epson LQ-850 (Early Model) driver. If that option is not available in your version of the software, then select the Epson LQ-500 driver or Epson LQ-2500 driver.

Epson LX 810

If you have problems with your LX-810, check your manual and set the sheet feeder to automatic, or installed.

Epson MX 80 with GrafTrax

GrafTrax is a firmware upgrade to old MX-80s to try to bring them up to MX-80 MK III compatibility.

A properly installed and functioning GrafTrax chip should provide graphics-printing support on an Epson MX-80. However, this printer is at least 7 years old. Epson stopped manufacturing GrafTrax chips and now leaves it to an add-on manufacturer. So, there are a lot of variables involved and it's difficult to be certain that the printer will work with our software. There have been mixed results.

Epson Stylus 200

According to Epson, the Stylus 200 is not compatible with DOS applications like NewDeal. In Release 3, try the Epson ESC/P2 drivers. The Stylus 200 has also been reported to work with NewDeal software using the Epson Stylus 800 driver, or the Epson LQ-570 or LQ-870 drivers.

Epson Stylus Color 300, 400, 440, 640, or Stylus Photo

According to Epson Technical Support, the Stylus Color 300, 400, 440, 640 and Stylus Photo series inkjet printers are not DOS compatible. These Stylus Color printers use ESC/P Raster language and the LQ models use ESC/P2. The difference in the languages prevents the printers from emulating the LQ or any other models. You can try selecting one of the following Epson LQ models in Preferences, Printer, New, but the results may not be positive.

Epson Stylus Color 600

From the Epson manual under "Printing from DOS":
Pick the first printer available from the following lists.

Color

Black only

Note: The drivers for the printers listed may not provide all EPSON Stylus Color 600 features, such as 14400-dpi printing, 720-dpi printing and MicroWeave.

Epson Stylus 740, 800, 850, 1000, or 3000

When using an Epson Stylus 740, 800, 850, 1000 or 3000 Color inkjet, use the driver named for the printer, or try the driver named Epson ESC/P2.

Although the printer manual says to use the Epson LQ 2550 driver if you're not using Windows, some customers say the Canon BJC 800 driver works well and is fast. The Epson LQ 2550 driver may be slower than the Canon driver, but also works. Other customers report good results when using the Epson LQ 870 driver.

Margin Settings

A customer reports using these settings to print at the margins he set in his document: Some users report that the settings do not change proportionally. For instance, to get a 1" left margin, set it at 1.123. You may get better results by changing the printer default setting for mixed text and graphics mode to "ON".

Here are some tips based on using the Canon BJC-800 driver. Other drivers may yield similar results:

Color

Color output may seem skewed. The problem may be related to be the way RGB (video) info is translated to CMYK (printing) info and the most noticeably affected colors fall in the red-magenta spectrum. 100% Magenta seems to be translated into 37% Cyan, 100% Magenta, 10% Yellow, which yields a hue of violet. All colors requiring magenta are affected to some degree.

Epson Stylus 1500 or 1520

NewDeal software has not been formally tested with an Epson Stylus 1500 or 1520. However, according to Epson's technical support, the Epson Stylus 1500 and 1520 should work with the Epson ESC/P2 driver. They also emulate the IBM X24E and have been reported to work with the Epson LQ-2550 driver. PostScript support is also available for the Epson Stylus 1520. The PostScript option's name is EPSON Stylus RIP-PC (C842281).

Epson Stylus IIs

In Release 3, choose the Epson Stylus 2s driver. Some customers report using the Epson Stylus 800 driver for black and white printing and the Canon BJC 800 driver for color printing.
