Installing TRUEFFS on the OmniGo
In order to install TrueFFS on the OmniGo you will require the following:
Laptop or Desktop PC with a serial port and floppy Windows or Win95
installed on your PC

Serial interface cable, available in the OmniGo connectivity pack

In order to transfer the required driver from the PC to the OmniGo you must
first install the Geoworks Installer package. Please follow the procedures
detailed below. The quick installation will allow you to install the driver

Note: NEVER ATTEMPT TO FORMAT MagicRAM FLASH CARD ON THE OMNIGO AS THIS WILL
ERASE CRITICAL FILES AND THE CARD WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED.

Quick Installation

Preparing the OmniGo for driver transfer:
1. Connect the cable from the OmniGo to the serial port on the PC. Please
note which COM port you use on your PC. You will need this information
      when you run the Installer.
2. From the OmniGo s Home Screen select the Transfer icon.
3. In Transfer select the PC... icon and then select Connect
4. The OmniGo is now ready to receive the driver from the PC

Preparing the PC for driver transfer:

1. From the Windows Program Manager select: File
2. Then select: Run
3. In the Command Line field enter: a:\omnigo\install.exe and then press
      ENTER
4. When the prompt: Install to OmniGo or PCMCIA card via serial cable is
      displayed press ENTER.
5. Select the COM port to which you connected the cable.
6. Select the Install>> option (click the mouse or press Alt-I) to copy
      the file to the OmniGo.
7. A status bar will be displayed showing the transfer status.
8. When the transfer has completed exit the program.
9. The driver is now in the OmniGo.

To complete the installation procedure you must now reboot the OmniGo. This
is done by simultaneously pressing Shift ON NEXT keys. Note that the Shift
key is the key. Your OmniGo is now ready to store data on the Flash PC Card
(PCMCIA).

Using the Flash Card on the OmniGo

Note: NEVER ATTEMPT TO FORMAT MagicRAM FLASH CARD ON THE OMNIGO AS THIS WILL
ERASE CRITICAL FILES AND THE CARD WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED.

To ensure reliable operation of the OmniGo please follow the instructions
below:

The OmniGo does not support insertion and removal of any PC card while the
unit is ON. Thus, the OmniGo must be turned OFF before inserting any card
into the socket. In addition, before the card is removed, the Card Removal
icon should be selected. This icon is located at the bottom of the Home
Screen and it will ensure that the system is powered down before the card
is removed. This icon will also indicate when a card has been inserted in
the socket by changing to a darker outline of a PC Card.

After installing the card you can backup your databases to the card by going
to the Transfer utility. In this utility you can select which databases to
backup by highlighting them or tapping on the appropriate names. After
selecting the databases to copy choose the Copy option. Your data will now
be copied to the Flash card.

Note, in order to maximize the battery life of the OmniGo the transfer rate
to the Flash card has been limited. This will only be noticeable when backing
up large databases to the Flash card. The read performance is the same as
SRAM cards.

Using the Flash Card to Transfer Files between a PC and the OmniGo
In order to transfer files between your OmniGo and your laptop or desktop PC
you will need to have a PC Card (PCMCIA) socket in your PC and the TrueFFS
drivers installed. To install the TrueFFS drivers on your PC, run the Install
program from the floppy. Note that this is not the same install program you
used to transfer the driver to the OmniGo. This installation program is
located in the root directory of the floppy, i.e. a:\install or b:\install.

A quick installation procedure is included below while the complete
installation instructions are included in the PCMCIA Flash Card User's Manual
supplied with the Flash card.

TrueFFS for PC - Quick Installation

Most PCs which have a PCMCIA socket already have the low level software
required to run TrueFFS. If you are unsure about the software support
included in your system please read the troubleshooting guide in the PCMCIA
Flash Card User's Manual.

Otherwise follow the steps detailed below:
1. Insert the support floppy into drive a: or b: on your PC
2. If you are running Windows then exit to DOS
3. Type: A:\INSTALL (or B:\INSTALL if you inserted the floppy in the
      b: drive)
4. When prompted with /DRIVE= press ENTER. For detailed information
regarding this parameter refer to the user manual.
5. When prompted for additional input press ENTER to select the default
      values.
6. After the installation has completed you must reboot your PC for the
      drivers to take effect.
7. After rebooting TrueFFS will display the drive letters assigned to the
      PCMCIA sockets in your PC.
8. Insert the Flash card into the socket and access it using the drive
letter displayed by TrueFFS. The Flash card can now be used just like
a regular hard disk. Any files which you saved on the OmniGo can be
      accessed on the PC.

Note, you can use the TINFO utility to query the card and find out which
drive letter is assigned to it.

WHAT IS TRUEFFS?

TrueFFS, the TRUE Flash File System, is a complete software solution for
handling and integrating Flash memory on personal computers. TrueFFS
handles Flash cards and Flash arrays so that they are indistinguishable from
DOS disks. A Flash medium handled by TrueFFS will appear as just another
drive in your system. All special considerations and procedures relevant to
Flash are managed by TrueFFS, so that they are of no concern to the operating
system or to you. Flash memory, developed several years ago, has many
advantages, including non-volatility, programmability, extremely low power
consumption, and attractive prices. Until the arrival of TrueFFS, Flash
memory limitations had frustrated attempts to provide disk replacements on
flash memory cards, thereby making them inaccessible to the user. TrueFFS is
the first complete solution to this problem. TrueFFS operates as a standard
DOS device, with all the functionality of a DOS disk.

An Overview of TrueFFS

TrueFFS provides full disk emulation of Flash memory cards or devices for
DOS-compatible machines.
TrueFFS runs on MS-DOS or PC-DOS, Version 2.0 or higher, Windows and DR DOS.
To be active, TrueFFS should be installed and resident on the computer in the
form of a device driver or resident program (TSR). Once TrueFFS is installed,
it may be used to read from and write to the Flash medium. In fact, the full
DOS functionality available for floppy disks is available for the Flash medium
as well.

Files can be copied, viewed, or executed, directories can be created, and so
on. Before the Flash medium can be accessed by TrueFFS, it needs to be
formatted. The TrueFFS format is essential for disk emulation capability. The
details of this format are completely transparent to the user. TrueFFS medium
is formatted with the TFORMAT utility (and not the DOS FORMAT command).

The formatting required by TrueFFS is a one-time operation for each Flash
medium, similar to the formatting of a floppy disk. Removable Flash media
formatted by TrueFFS on one machine can be read from and written to on any
machine where TrueFFS is installed.

TrueFFS communicates with the Flash device controller or adapter through
software drivers called Card Services and Socket Services. Card Services and
Socket Services are accepted standards of the PCMCIA (Personal Computer
Memory-Card International Association). PCMCIA software is not provided
with the TrueFFS package, except in special cases. This software is machine-
specific, and therefore should be provided by the computer vendor,
controller/adapter vendor, or by the TrueFFS integrator.
